Adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

You don't need experience. You don't need to be in shape. You just need to walk through the door. Our adult classes follow the proven Gracie Barra curriculum, taught by Professor Edgar — a black belt with 15 years of mat time under Master Roberto 'Tussa' Alencar. Morning or evening, first day or hundredth — every class meets you where you are.

Adult classes at Gracie Barra Cibolo follow the same belt-and-stripe curriculum used across more than 1,000 GB academies worldwide, adapted by Professor Edgar for the mix of first-timers, returning hobbyists, and steady weekly trainers who walk through our doors off FM 1103. Every session is taught by a black belt — never a colored belt covering a shift — and every session has a clear technical theme that ties to what came before and what comes next.

A typical hour pairs a focused warm-up with a specific position study: a guard pass one week, an escape sequence the next. After the technical breakdown you drill the move with a partner at a measured pace, then run light positional rounds so the technique stops being something you saw and starts being something you own. The 6:30 PM Mon/Wed/Fri block is built around working professionals from Bentwood Ranch, Steele Canyon, and the surrounding Cibolo Valley neighborhoods who want a real training session that fits between the workday and dinner.

Progress is measurable and patient. New stripes mark consistent attendance and skill checkpoints; new belts mark genuine technical growth that holds up against resisting partners. Because the curriculum is shared across the Gracie Barra network, your rank travels with you — useful for JBSA-Randolph families and anyone who relocates and wants to walk into a new GB academy without starting over.

First class is free, no contract required. Come watch, come train, or call (830) 205-3222 and we'll get you on the schedule for the next session at Cibolo Valley Square.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have no martial arts experience — can I start adult BJJ?
Yes. The majority of adults who start at Gracie Barra Cibolo have zero experience. The GB1 Fundamentals class is designed specifically for that. Professor Edgar breaks down every technique into clear steps, and you train with partners who know how to work with beginners. Nobody expects you to know anything on day one — that is what the curriculum is for.
How often should I train as a beginner?
Two to three sessions per week is a strong starting point. Gracie Barra Cibolo offers adult classes throughout the week — mornings, midday, and evenings — so you have options. Consistency matters more than volume. Training twice a week and showing up every week will produce better results than training five days one week and disappearing the next. Professor Edgar can help you plan a schedule that fits your life.
Will I get hurt training BJJ?
Minor soreness is normal when you start any physical activity, but BJJ at Gracie Barra Cibolo is structured to minimize injury risk. Professor Edgar enforces controlled drilling before any live sparring, and beginners are not thrown into full-intensity rounds. You tap when something is uncomfortable, your partner releases immediately, and training resumes. That mutual respect is fundamental to how Gracie Barra schools operate.
What is the difference between GB1 Fundamentals and advanced classes?
GB1 Fundamentals covers the core positions, escapes, sweeps, and submissions that form the backbone of Jiu-Jitsu. At Gracie Barra Cibolo, every student begins here regardless of athletic background. Once you develop solid fundamentals and earn your coach's recommendation, you progress to advanced classes that introduce more complex techniques, longer sparring rounds, and competition-oriented training. The curriculum ensures you are ready before you move up.
Do I need to be in shape to start?
No. You get in shape by training — not the other way around. Adults of every fitness level start at Gracie Barra Cibolo and improve steadily. The warm-ups, drilling, and sparring build strength, flexibility, and cardio over time. Professor Edgar and the coaches scale intensity to your current ability. Within a few weeks, you will notice real changes in how your body feels and performs. Call (830) 205-3222 to schedule your free class.
