Kids Jiu-Jitsu

Cibolo parents tell us the same things: 'I want my kid to be more confident,' 'I need them to focus,' 'I want them to be able to stand up for themselves.' That's exactly why our kids' program exists. Children age 3 through 13 train in age-specific groups — Tiny Champions, Little Champions I & II, and Juniors. For homeschool families, we run combined-age classes every Monday and Wednesday at 10 AM, so siblings can train together and the session counts toward homeschool physical education.

Gracie Barra Cibolo's kids program is built around how children actually learn — short attention spans, clear rules, real challenges, and visible progress. Professor Edgar runs four age-specific groups: Tiny Champions (3 to 4), Little Champions I (5 to 6), Little Champions II and Juniors (7 to 13). Each group trains a curriculum tuned to its developmental stage, so a four-year-old works on listening and partner coordination while a ten-year-old drills takedowns and escapes that demand real technique.

The weeknight schedule fits Cibolo family life. Little Champions I starts at 4:45 PM, Little Champions II and Juniors run at 5:30 PM, and Tiny Champions has its own dedicated Tuesday and Thursday slot. For homeschool families, we run combined-age classes every Monday and Wednesday at 10 AM — siblings from age 3 through 13 train together in one session, and the structured Gracie Barra curriculum is documented well enough to count toward Texas homeschool physical education.

Progress is visible and earned. Stripes and belts are awarded for genuine skill milestones, not attendance trophies. Parents from Bentwood Ranch, Deer Creek, and the broader Cibolo Valley tell us the change shows up at home first — better focus, better self-control, the willingness to try something hard and stick with it. Because there's no striking in BJJ, the program is dramatically safer than gymnastics, soccer, or a backyard trampoline.

The first class is always free. Bring your child in athletic clothes, sit mat-side and watch, and see whether the room feels right. Call (830) 205-3222 to reserve a trial spot.

Why Kids Love BJJ

  • Age-specific groups so a four-year-old isn't lost among nine-year-olds — every child trains at their own developmental level
  • Mon/Wed 10 AM homeschool classes — combined-age sessions where siblings train together and the curriculum logs as PE
  • Anti-bullying skills grounded in real grappling, not theory — children learn to handle physical conflict with calm composure
  • Better focus at home and in school — parents notice the change in how their child listens, follows directions, and finishes tasks
  • A measurable belt-and-stripe progression that teaches goal-setting, patience, and the value of showing up consistently
  • A safer alternative to most contact sports — no striking, no head impact, every drill supervised by a black belt

Frequently Asked Questions

What age can my child start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Gracie Barra Cibolo?
Gracie Barra Cibolo offers kids classes for children ages 3 through 15. Classes are divided into age-appropriate groups so younger children train with peers their own size, and older kids are challenged at the right level. Professor Edgar and the coaching staff tailor every session to each age group's physical and social development.
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu safe for kids?
Safety is the foundation of every kids class at Gracie Barra Cibolo. Professor Edgar runs a structured warm-up, teaches controlled technique drills, and supervises all live training. There is no striking in BJJ — the focus is on leverage and positioning, which makes it one of the safest martial arts for children. Our mats, equipment, and instructor-to-student ratios are designed to keep every child protected while they learn.
My child has never done martial arts before — will they be able to keep up?
Absolutely. Most kids who walk through the door at Gracie Barra Cibolo are complete beginners. The Gracie Barra curriculum is built so that new students learn fundamentals step by step before progressing. Professor Edgar and the instructors pair beginners with experienced training partners who help them learn. Your child will feel welcome from day one.
How does BJJ help with bullying and confidence?
Jiu-Jitsu teaches children how to stay calm under pressure and resolve conflict without aggression. At Gracie Barra Cibolo, students build genuine confidence through measurable progress — earning stripes, advancing belts, and mastering techniques they could not do a month earlier. Parents consistently tell us their children carry that confidence into school, friendships, and everyday situations. If you have questions, call us at (830) 205-3222.
How do I enroll my child and what should they bring to their first class?
You can book a free trial class at Gracie Barra Cibolo through our website or by calling (830) 205-3222. For the first class, your child just needs comfortable athletic clothing — shorts or sweatpants and a t-shirt. If they continue, we will help you get fitted for a Gracie Barra gi. Professor Edgar encourages every family to come watch a class before signing up so you can see the environment firsthand.
